Mondovi - For the last time, Charlie the therapy pony will visit senior citizen residents inside American Luther- an Homes Mondovi. After 15 years of creating smiles and lasting memories inside the care facility, Charlie will officially retire and say goodbye.
“Every time Charlie comes over for a visit, residents are surprised but also very welcoming”, said American Lu- theran Homes Mondovi Director Ken King.
King says the Shetland pony has been going inside senior living facilities all these years to help residents cope with aging related disabilities and dementias.
“Charlie’s visits have calmed residents, made them more relaxed and he always brings a smile to their faces”, King says.
Studies have shown patients dealing with dementia conditions like Alzheimer’s disease benefit from animal ther- apy, including personal visits from ponies like Charlie.
King says the visits over the last 15 years have brought up stories about horses from residents. He says the visits are overwhelmingly positive and help residents recall key events in their past, exercising their mind.
King, along with Charlie’s owner Pat Bauer, will be able to talk about the amazing effect the pony has on residents at the facility. Some of those residents will also be available for interviews about Charlie’s amazing effect.
